Settling into the vibrant colors and crisp fall air, we wanted to look back at how our peak prediction customers performed during the summer peak energy season.
Our dedicated forecasting and proactive peak prediction services did very well in helping customers navigate the complex demands of high-energy usage across North America. We hit all the peaks across two Independent System Operators (ISO), one Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), and ten PJM zones.
Let’s dive into the highlights.
IESO (Ontario): All 5 peaks called within 11 notifications only
Ontario saw its highest demand levels since the summer of 2020, when the Industrial Conservation Initiative (ICI) was temporarily paused due to COVID. 2024 brought early challenges with unusually high demand starting in mid-June—ahead of the typical summer peak season trends—coupled with unpredictable weather patterns that kept demand volatility high.
In total, EnPowered called all five peaks accurately within 11 notifications, compared to the 27+ alerts of the broader market that captured only four of the five peaks. Our data-driven approach allowed us to significantly reduce the number of calls needed, ensuring fewer customer disruptions while achieving 100% peak accuracy.
NYISO: Early ‘All Clear’ notifications minimized operational disruptions
With high temperatures and multiple heat waves across New York, we anticipated a challenging summer peak energy season. Due to the unusual demands, we called more often than usual but could adapt and cancel the calls early when necessary – before customers started curtailing. As a result, no customers responded more than five times while still getting the #1 peak, adding convenience and minimizing operational disruptions.

PJM: $200,000 per MW saved through precise peak notifications
Our PJM customers had great success this summer, with all five capacity peak hours captured in 2 to 3-hour call windows. This precision allowed customers to maximize their savings, especially important with rising capacity prices following the July auction.
In addition to capacity peaks, many of our customers took advantage of EnPowered’s transmission peak notifications to optimize their savings even further. There was a significant overlap between capacity and transmission peaks this summer, with some zones experiencing as many as four overlapping peaks. Through our notifications, customers saved significantly more money while curtailing only a tiny bit more.
The result is that for similar efforts, they will save upwards of $200,000 per MW next year due to smarter curtailment this summer — a tremendous boost to their bottom line.
Looking Ahead to the Winter Coincident Peak Season
Our success this summer underscores EnPowered’s commitment to excellence and the significant value we bring to our customers in navigating peak demands. As winter approaches, we’ll bring the same forecasting and peak prediction expertise to help customers manage potential winter peaks in several PJM zones.
While it’s unlikely that IESO (Ontario) will experience a winter peak this year due to high summer usage, we’re ready to act should the unexpected occur.
Thank you to our customers for trusting us to keep you ahead of the peaks! Here’s to another successful season ahead.
