What is the TCI?

The Transportation and Climate Initiative (TCI) involves the collaboration of (as of January 2021) 12 east coast U.S. states; Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia—as well as the District of Columbia. Founded in 2010, the TCI looks to improve the transportation sector, which accounts for over a third of total U.S. emissions.

To this end, the TCI is promoting the development of a clean energy economy, clean fuels, electric vehicles and other efforts that reduce carbon emissions from the transportation sector. In terms of implementation, TCI efforts are directed by each state or district’s relevant agencies, which in turn are free to decide whether and how they will participate in individual projects and working groups.
